Cervical screening is performed to try to identify women who may go on to develop cervical cancer before it occurs. The great majority of women who have a 'positive' smear do not have cancer, but need either closer monitoring or some treatment to the cervix to prevent it developing.
Drs Wisely and Garland together with our practice nurse can all perform smear tests.
First invitation is at age 25, and routine recalls are every 3 yrs until age 49. From 50-65 yrs recalls are every 5 years. Testing before age 25 is not necessary, and indeed may be harmful, as many women this age can be falsely identified as being at risk and so be exposed to unnecessary treatment.
If you are 25 or over and have not had an invitation to screening, please contact the surgery for an appointment. If you would prefer not to be tested please let us know so we do not send you unnecessary reminders.
